Slavs of New York recently came upon Russian-Bath.com, a website by Ruslan Sudentas featuring listings and reviews of the city’s Russian-style banyas. Previously, we only had three links under “Spas,” so this find is quite a treat. The listings so far feature eight banyas: Okeanos (Midtown Manhattan, 4 Stars), Wall Street Bath & Spa (Financial District, Manhattan. 3.5 Stars), Bania Inc. (Coney Island, Brooklyn. 2.5 Stars), Russian Baths of NY (Gravesend Neck, Brooklyn. 2.5 Stars), Russian & Turkish Baths (East Village, Manhattan. 2 Stars), Emerald Spa (Long Island City, Queens. 2.5 Stars), Sandoony USA (Brooklyn, unrated), and Forest Hills Spa (Queens, unrated), as well as International Steam Bath (Passaic, NJ., unrated) There is also a review of the Mermaid Spa (Seagate, Brooklyn. 3.5 Stars), which recently burnt down.
Another choice recently discovered link is Russian Restaurants in the USA, featuring over 100 restaurant listings linked to interactive maps.Manhattan is represented by 18 restaurants. As is to be expected, the majority (89!) are in Brooklyn thanks to the large concentration in Brighton Beach, but Queens is also particularly well represented, with 26. It must be noted that all sections of the listings include not only Russian but also Caucasian, Central Asian, Ukrainian and even Polish spots, as well as a number of restaurants that have closed (Pop’s Pierogi, RIP). The seven restaurants in the ‘Other Parts of New York section include listings for Staten Island, Oceanside, Williamsville, buffalo and Warwick.
